The first step in AAS is to dissolve or digest a portion of the sample (thus the sample is sacrificed for the measurement). Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy AAS is commonly used to measure metal impurities that are present at very low levels in samples (water, blood, food, alloys, etc.). Some methods utilize portions of the sample for analysis and other methods are nondestructive in their mode of operation. ![]() Trace analysis is one part of QA or quality assurance and there are many different methods of making trace analysis measurements. Trace impurities in an alloy or in semiconductors can render the materials useless in the desired application. In materials, properties can be impacted by the presence of minute quantities of an impurity. It is used to measure impurities in foods and pharmaceuticals as well as in environmental monitoring. The elements on the periodic table are listed in order of ascending atomic. Trace analysis is important in many different applications.
